As a Wonderfully Weird connoisseur I have made it my mission to seek out odd fashion pieces. Those quirky items true fashionistas cannot get enough of, and crave on a consistent basis. Therefore, this week I would like to focus on a style most would not dare consider, and that’s prison fashion. When most envision prison, jail or the big house stripes instantly come to mind. There is an allure to black +Member Loginwhite stripes and the following items are meant to do just that.
“The Good and the criminal” White stripes by designer Bajowoo. Items featured at the 2014 runway show at Japan Fashion Week
Women Prison Couture
Initiated on 19th of August 2009 in Finland, Project Papillon’s whole line has been created while offering inmates meaningful work on the road to rehabilitation.
Gaga modeling prison couture
A model in Neve Tirza prison for women in Ramle, central Israel.
According to the website,“Prisoners studying makeup application or hairdressing at the jail joined in to style the models, who wore white avant-garde streaks on their cheeks. Once dressed, the models paraded down a red carpet lined by prison fencing topped by rolls of barbed wire.”

In today’s society it seems everyone is chasing the next big thing, especially in fashion. Whether it’s the new Jordan’s, Prada slippers, or Louboutin’s, everyone wants a piece of top products. This is fine but what about those with a weird sense of style? The person that marches to the beat of their own drum, while straying from the normal fashion market.
Have no fear because Wonderfully Weird has arrived. The weekly blog posting various fashion items including: clothing, jewelry, shoes, and styling tips considered odd by others. My style is different from most because it focuses on funky, different, and classy pieces others tend to shy away from. Here is a small sample of my taste, and I look forward to sharing my works weekly with the group.
This week features items from the psychedelic 60s. A time where peace, drugs, hippies and free love were a part of the norm across the globe; especially among young adults. In my opinion, it was also a great era of odd fashion statements for the masses. Here are a few of my personal favorites.
Andre Courreges
André Courrèges, (born March 9, 1923, Pau, France), dress designer who first made a reputation in the Parisian fashion world of the 1960s for futuristic, youth-oriented styles. In 1961 Courrèges opened his own fashion house, and by 1964 he had become established as one of the most original couturiers in Paris. His collection featured proportionate, well-cut pants, rigidly constructed clothes with smooth “trapeze,” or trapezoidal, lines, and short skirts, with white midcalf boots and large, dark glasses as accessories. White became his trademark. Source: Encyclopedia Britannica

Mary Quant
Mary Quant OBE, FCSD (born 11 February 1934) is a fashion designer and British fashion icon. She became an instrumental figure in the 1960s London-based Mod and youth fashion movements. She was one of the designers who took credit for the miniskirt and hot pants, and by promoting these and other fun fashions she encouraged young people to dress to please themselves and to treat fashion as a game. Ernestine Carter, an authoritative and influential fashion journalist of the 1950s and ’60s, wrote: “It is given to a fortunate few to be born at the right time, in the right place, with the right talents. In recent fashion there are three: Chanel, Dior, and Mary Quant Source: Wikipedia

This week focuses on French fashion couture artist Hubert de Givenchy, including the various styles created over the years.
Hubert de Givenchy
According to the fashion informat, Fashion Designer Hubert de Givenchy was born to a wealthy family 1927 in Beauvais, France. He studied at the ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. His first job in the fashion industry was when he worked for Jacques Fath in Paris in 1945. He then worked briefly for Robert Piguet and for Lucien Lelong (1946) [where he worked with Lelong”s assistants, Pierre Balmain and Christian Dior], and finally for Elsa Schiaparelli (1947 1951). He opened the House of Givenchy in 1952. He named his first collection for Bettina Graziani, Paris’s top model. Balenciaga was his mentor, although he never worked for him, whose atelier was just across the avenue George V.
Two women represent the typical Givenchy style of the 50s and 60s: Audrey Hepburn and Jackie Kennedy. By furnishing Hollywood movie stars beginning in 1953, Givenchy achieved popularity like never before. A rather sad event brought global attention to Givenchy dresses. When John F.Kennedy was assassinated, the world witnessed a mourning Kennedy family all dressed in Givenchy clothes. Jackie Kennedy ordered a Givenchy dress for the funeral, which was especially flown in from Paris. It is said, that at that time, the Givenchy atelier possessed individual patterns sheets for every female member of the Kennedy family. In 1955, he introduced separates and then the Orlon fabric to the haute couture. His designs are elegant and refined.
In 1988, Givenchy sold his business to Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton (LVMH) for financial reasons. Until his retirement in 1995, he remained head of design, always working in a white lab coat. Givenchy is a collector of antique furniture, Louis XIV through French Empire.
